Project Overview
Mt Ruapehu is New Zealand’s largest ski area. Its key market is the North Island domestic skier.
Skiing is a weather dependant activity and as a winter sport there are inevitable periods of bad weather. Conversely there are also periods of exceptionally clear blue days, some of which occur during the week when skiers are less likely to take the risk of heading to the mountains without knowing what the conditions are like.
To stimulate the mid-week market, Mt Ruapehu wanted a solution that would help them communicate to their clients when the conditions were right for a great day of skiing.
The Brief
Come up with a solution to communicate blue sky days effectively to clients to help improve mid-week ski day numbers.
Our Solution
Text and email alerts: These days, text messaging and email are popular and relatively cheap ways to communicate. To meet Mt Ruapehu's brief, we set up a system that encourages users to opt in to an alerts tool. This tool sends skiers an alert when the conditions are perfect for a blue sky day of skiing.
Flexibility: The alert application was built to provide as many options as possible for users. With Cabbage Tree's alert application, users can set preferred dates, times and message type (text or email) so they only receive the information they want, in the way they want it and when they want it.
Trust & Loyalty: Easy opt-in and opt-out mechanisms in this application aren’t just about complying with the law; they're about building trust and offering control to the user. This retains customer loyalty and improves uptake.
Easy maintenance and updates for the client: Integrated with ThriveCMS this application is easy for the client to maintain and requires very little in the way of extra training or adaptations to existing content management skills. Cabbage Tree Creative’s approach to content management is to integrate all applications into one seamless solution.
Success Factors
Understanding the problem and understanding the technologies that can solve the problem meant Cabbage Tree Creative had a clear vision on how to resolve this issue.
Using existing software and infrastructure, such as the contact database already established by our ThriveMail system, we were able to expand on this technology whilst keeping costs as low as possible.
Mt Ruapehu’s willingness to try new marketing techniques, their commitment to the objective and good follow through on information updates means the application is being used effectively.
