FAQ

What is an IP address?

IP stands for Internet Protocol. This is a system for assigning a unique identifier to all devices, such as computers, modems and PDA’s, that use the Internet. These devices are all given a series of numbers which is their unique identifier and “address” on the Internet; it is how we locate resources such as devices or files over the Internet. It is similar to our physical address system, where houses have an address which we use to find them and communicate with them. An example of an IP address is 157.166.255.18.

IP address’ can also have a more readable, human form, which is known as the domain name. The IP address is really just the numeric version of the domain name. But domain names were created because it is much easier for people to remember a domain name than an IP address! Therefore you can get to a website if you know the IP address or domain name. The above IP address example is for the CNN website, and you can get to the website by using www.cnn.com or 157.166.255.18.
